I’ve been sitting in the crowd for days, listening to Jesus teach. I am wired, filled with energy, hanging on every word. I am excited to be up close and hear His words first hand.
Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
“If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day. For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken. I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.” (John 12:44-50)
Jesus revealed who He is. Did anyone else catch it, did you hear what He said? The teacher, the Messiah, He proclaimed it for all who were listening. He is God, one with God. Oh my gosh! I get it. He’s come to save me. I am bursting with excitement. Who can I share the good news with, who can I tell?
As I read Jesus’ words today, I couldn’t help but put myself in the scene. Feeling the energy of the crowds, smelling the people in the heat, people pushing, trying to get a better look. I have no doubt there were mixed emotions that day. How would the crowds have reacted? How many would believe and how many would walk away? If you were there, what would you have thought? If you had been following Him, unsure, would His words have convinced you?
Jesus had been proclaiming the good news the last 3 years, sharing with all who would listen that He was The Messiah who had come to save the world. He had given ample evidences of His divinity and yet many still did not believe. He had shown His followers how to live, He demonstrated how to pray, how to serve and how to love. He came to save you and me and to bring peace to the world.
What do you believe?
