Last night I went over to my son and daughter-in-laws for dinner to bring them a collection of ornaments for their tree we were not using. It was great to see them and catch up on the goings on in our lives. After dinner they lit their tree up for me to see and had me put on some special glasses. I got the biggest kick out of what I saw. All the lights on their tree turned into reindeer or angels depending on the glasses I put on. This was so fun, I put those glasses on multiple times and marveled at what I saw before my eyes. Those glasses provided me a fresh perspective of their tree and brought me joy and laughter as well.
Might you need a fresh perspective of Jesus this season?
There has been seasons in my life where I’ve tended to focus on only one “method” of getting to know Jesus, mainly reading the Bible, and neglected other ways of experiencing the character and love of my Savior. I’m not advocating ditching your Bible, but I am wondering if you are desiring to gain a broader perspective of who Jesus is and to experience the tenderness of His love.
He simply asks us to taste and see His goodness, but what does that actually look like for each of us. Sometimes we need to shake up our routines and try something new. Instead of sitting down with your Bible today, why not take 10 minutes to listen to some worship music. Don’t just enjoy the beat, but truly listen to the words within the songs. The message of God’s faithfulness and love is interwoven in so many old hymns and in our contemporary music, that these words can give you a fresh perspective of our Lord and Savior.
Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. (Colossians 3:16)
Over the last few days, God has continued to bring to mind the following hymn: Come Thou Fount of Blessing. There are various versions, but they all share similarities. This song helps me remember God’s graciousness, His unending and unchanging love for me and the joy that can be found in worshipping Him through song. It reminds me that even though I am sinner, Jesus’ precious blood paid the price for me so I can receive the precious gift of being His child.
Music is powerful, it creates a wave of emotion in all of us. A foot stomping joy or a sense of reverence depending on the song, but I know God loves it when we sing to Him. Raising our voices in love and praise also gives God the opportunity to refocus our thoughts on Him. In that holy moment, and I believe it is a holy moment, He can touch our heart in new and profound ways. In the singing, we give our all to Him and His love washes over us, calming our hearts, allowing us to see His tender love. In that moment, a peace can be claimed, a peace that can only come through Christ.
So today, listen to your favorite worship song and let the words wash over you and minister to you. Open your heart, hands held high and ask Jesus to give you a fresh perspective of His love.
