Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep. You, Lord, preserve both people and animals. How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.
What a beautiful picture David has drawn for us of God’s love and the continuous flowing waters of life He offers each person who choses to come to Him.
As I read this portion of the Psalm, I thought of Buckingham Fountain in downtown Chicago. Buckingham Fountain operates with 3 pumps. Pump 1 releases 1,600 gallons of water per minute, Pump 2 5,500 gallons/min, and Pump 3 7,000 gallons/min. Not all three pumps operate at once, pumps 2 & 3 are only used once an hour for 20 minutes for the major water display. (Chicago Park District web site) That’s a lot of water to move. The power to flow the water upwards, through 134 jets, creates the most beautiful display of water and the mist it leaves in the air.
This is the picture I see when I think of God’s offer of the fountain of life. A continuous and abundant source of life that helps each of us to see the light of the Lord before us. His offer to feast on His abundance and to drink from the river of His delights is available to any who will come. When was the last time you feasted on His abundant love through His words?
As I have been meditating on these words, God has impressed upon my heart the need to partake upon the feast He offers, going to the fountain to be replenished daily just as Jesus took time daily to pray and speak to His Father. To be God’s instrument each day, I must replenish myself or become dry and parched. What a better way to be replenished than to partake in Gods offer to drink from the river of His delights.
As we delight in the fountain of life He offers, the fountain will begin to flow from within our hearts. Our delight in Him will flow out in a smile, a word of encouragement, or a helping hand. In addition, “for with you is the fountain of life,” reminds us the Holy Spirit within us call us to share God’s love with others. As followers of Jesus, we can be that fountain, filled with the enormous power of the Holy Spirit to be a light to those we love and encounter this Christmas Season.
I pray you have an opportunity today to experience water from His fountain of life, to drink from the river of delights through His Word, and experience the full measure of love He has for you.
It is because of this great love that God has for me that I have begun this journey to write until Christmas. But not just because of His great love, but because in the stillness of my quiet time with the Lord, I have felt that undeniable nudge from God to bring Him glory by encouraging other’s to taste and see in His goodness during what can become a season that loses sight of Jesus. I pray my words give you something to ponder and move you to spend some intimate time alone with our great God each day.
