In Step With God

In Step With God

Hand in Hand

In Step With God

Brisk air fills our lungs, refreshing, invigorating. Walking hand in hand, our pace increases, our walking rhythm matching one another. Deep ruts invade the path before us, evidence of the work being done in the forest. We separate, avoiding the deep ruts, our pace slows as we climb to the summit. As the terrain levels, our hands reconnect, our pace and rhythm unsteady. Finally, our rhythm matches, a peaceful comfortable gait begins, we smile, in step with one another, we move ahead with joy.

Walking hand in hand, it takes time to adjust your pace to the same rhythm. Often one person sets the pace, leading the way, and then adjusts for the person walking alongside. Depending on a person’s ability, they slow or increase their pace, matching rhythms.

Walking with God is similar to walking hand in hand with another. When your pace and rhythm match, walking becomes smoother, comfortable, peaceful even. But at times, we can get out of step with God. When I chose to lag behind God or speed ahead, no longer following closely, the rhythm is interrupted. When this happens, it takes me a few days to get back in step with God. I begin to wonder, did I miss something God had for me in the moment?

Staying in step with God helps us live fully alive and be present in the moment.

As we walk with God, He knows the best pace to set. He loves us, He knows us inside and out because we are His creation. He has knit us together in our mother’s womb, knows the path ahead and He knows our abilities. When we allow God to set the pace, there is a more peaceful rhythm to the day and we become less hurried and more present in the moment.

By adjusting the rhythm of our step to His, our hearts are opened to both His presence and what He may have in store for us today. If our day becomes an uphill climb, we are able to recognize God is beside us, adjusting the pace to walk the difficulty together. And when we tire, He is there to help carry the load.

It’s not always easy to stay in step with God. Agendas, tasks, work, family and life in general pull at us from all directions and human tendency is to simply get through. But there is a better way by staying In Step With God.

How can we keep in step with God?

  • PRAY – Before you get out of bed, ask God to lead you today, to help you follow, and set your pace to His.
  • BREATHE  Each time you feel overwhelmed or out of step, take a deep breath, slow down, and look to Jesus.
  • FOCUS – Look no further than today. Learning to focus on one day at a time lowers our threshold of stress,  “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.” (Mt 6:34, MSG)

Lord Jesus, Help me to stay present in the moment. I find it hard to stay in step with you each day. I’m prone to going my own way. I desire to take your hand and let you set the pace for today. May you have mercy on my wanderings and remind me to return my focus back to you. I trust you will help me to deal with whatever comes my way today and tomorrow.
I love you Jesus. Amen.
