Rest and Play

Rest and Play

When was the last time you simply relaxed, staring off into space?  Or how about played-doing something silly that made you laugh until tears were streaming down your face?

We all need time to rest, replenish, and play. To remember what it was like to be a kid, to savor the moment of pleasure and joy that comes from throwing adulthood to the wind and acting like a kid, if even for a moment.

I highly recommend taking time to play.  It recalibrate our souls, lightens our mood and helps to reframe what life is all about.  Whether it’s a week at the beach with your Besties (the best fun ever), or a couple of hours with your spouse, take some time to play and act like a kid again.

This past week I spent time with my Besties at the beach.  We swam, we pretended our pool noodles were ponies, we laughed so hard we cried, we played games, and we simply relished resting and being together.

We discovered that yes, you can travel while on dialysis, people get out of your way when you’re pushing a 28” suitcase through the airport with your “life saving medical device,” and I saw first hand how friends stick by you through he thick and thin of life(they were not deterred by my life on dialysis). We have been there for each other for almost 19 years celebrating life’s good times and mourning life’s challenges together.  I can’t imagine doing life without them.

Who are your Besties?  Who is your tribe? Have you taken time to create friendships and memories?

God has designed us with a rhythm in mind.  Time for work, but also time to play, to celebrate, and delight in life. He created us for connection with others and with Himself. Everyday is an opportunity to turn your eyes to Him and say-“God open my eyes to your presence today, help me to delight in You.”

While on vacation at the beach,  I marveled at the rhythm of the sea.  The high and low tide that moves with the moon, the variety of shells that once housed creatures, the sand, the dolphins, all created by God so I could be delighted and amazed. To see His love for me by simply looking around and recognizing creation as His.

My Lord has “brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.” (Psalm 18:19)

He “directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” (Psalm 37:23)

Dear friends, our Lord delights in you each day and He is overjoyed when you turn to Him in worship and thankfulness, He wants you to get out there and play, to rest and replenish.  Take some time this weekend to do something silly and fun, through caution to the wind, and act like a kid again.  Then turn and thank God for the time to play and be delighted in His presence.

Blessings,
