Over the last few weeks I have been writing about the Fruit of the Spirit, looking at each trait individually. This week the topic is goodness. As I began to think about the word, I realized how intertwined the Fruit is. Each a part of the other and when we are truly in tune with the Spirit, all work together to bring God honor and glory as we live our daily lives.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23)
Each quality is a gift from the Spirit given to us when we become a part of the family of Christ. We have each of these qualities within us every day, some play out more strongly on some days, some of the gifts we may think we lack the strength to exhibit, but each is there. On the best of days, I struggle to live a life that reflects all the fruit, but I am grateful for the grace of Jesus that gives me second chances when I fail to be patient with a child, or show love to that difficult person in my life.
Goodness, what does that look like in my life as a follower of Jesus? Really an interesting question, because my first inclination is to say, I am a nice person, friendly, helpful, a good listener, ready to jump in and help in a crisis. But that doesn’t quite describe what goodness as a fruit is. We are unable to truly live out goodness without the help of the Spirit and without the other Fruits as well. Because of Jesus we have a goodness that can point others to Him, we can be the light.
“(for the fruit of light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.)” (Ephesians 5:9)
Do your daily actions reflect the goodness of Jesus?
As I ask myself that question, it brings to mind things I can improve upon, things I may need to change, mainly some attitudes, but also ways to better manage my time so that I am available to act when Jesus prompts. I desire for my life to reflect the light of Jesus, to show His love and goodness every day to those around me.
As you reflect upon the Fruit of the Spirit in your life, where do you see an opportunity to share the Light of Jesus with someone around you? Take the opportunity to share His love today in a tangible way.
